SERVICE OVERVIEW

Cars manufactured after 2000 will have an insurance approved (Thatcham) category 2 immobiliser which in most cases will be equal to or better than the aftermarket equivalent. Some recent cars also have alarms fitted which are often linked to the vehicle ECU so difficult to defeat. Where an alarm is required to be fitted to a modern car it will need to be programmed  to match the onboard CANbus system. These alarm devices make use of the car remote key fob to arm and disarm the alarm thus negating the need to carry a separate fob

For older vehicles without CANbus systems, alarms are available with or without remote fobs to Thatcham category 1 status. There are also Thatcham category 2 immobilisers for cars built prior to 2000. So to conclude, there are essentially 4 types of popular security devices.

  1. Thatcham Category 2 immobiliser
  2. Thatcham Category 1 alarm and immobiliser
  3. Thatcham CANbus Category 1 upgrade from Category 2
  4. GPS Tracking systems that monitor the movement of vehicles

POPULAR QUESTIONS

  • How long does it take to install an alarm?

It can take between 3 and 5 hours to install a Category 1 alarm system. We like to keep the car for an extra 30 minutes locked and armed to test for stability before releasing it. We normally need to programme an alarm to suit the electrical systems on modern cars which we do in advance of the installation.

  • How do I decide which system to install?

The best way is to talk to us. By knowing which vehicle you drive and what you are trying to achieve we can help you decide on the best option.

  • Why is Category 5 tracking so expensive?

Cat 5 systems use an identification card that you carry in your pocket or purse. The system recognises the card and all is well. If the card is not present then it signals the tracking station that the car is probably being stolen. This differs from the Cat 6 tracking system where it is your responsibility to notify the tracking station if your car is stolen.
